Update: Machine Learning-based Navigation System for the Visually Impaired

You’ve been eagerly awaiting it, now there’s news about SBB Inclusive, respectively the door button recognition. We’ve collected quite a bit of user feedback in the meantime, but first things first: door button detection has made it into the productive SBB Inclusive app on iOS as a standalone feature! While refined by feedback, the technical approach has remained the same. You can now try the feature yourself without having to contact us.

The user feedback so far is generally very positive, but we found that it takes a bit of practice to be able to use the new feature for quickly detecting door buttons. We are continuously working to incorporate new ideas and better understand user challenges. Most important, the safety of our passengers remains in the foreground.

At the same time, we are working on the Android version of the door button recognition. However, the hardware diversity of the ecosystem is much more challenging and usually restricts the feature to rather expensive and new devices. The majority of users own iOS devices though, which allows for our prioritisation. We now also have our internal ML specialist on the team to further develop the machine learning model in the background. We will make sure to keep you updated here regarding news for the SBB Inclusive App.
